How the Blackademy Awards works — nominations, verification, voting and trust.
Who — and what — can be nominated?
Black actors, filmmakers and artists across Africa and the diaspora, and the films, performances and craft they created. Some categories honour a person, others a film or a song — each category makes clear which.
What makes a nomination eligible?
The work must be from the current season's eligibility year, be a real released credit, and meet the category's published criteria. The Eligibility page has the rules.
What happens after I submit a nomination?
It goes into a review queue. Nothing appears publicly until it has been checked; once verified, it joins the nominees.
Who verifies nominations?
The Blackademy review team checks every submission against the published criteria. The review is independent — no studio, distributor or campaign is involved.
Why might a nomination be rejected?
Usually because the work is outside the season's release year, the entry couldn't be confirmed, doesn't meet the category criteria, or duplicates an existing entry. Offensive submissions are rejected automatically.
What about duplicates and corrections?
Each nominee holds one spot per category, so duplicates are declined. If a name, film or photo is wrong, email contact@blackademyawards.com and it will be corrected.
Can I change my vote?
Yes. One vote per category, changeable at any time while voting is open. Your latest choice is the one that counts.
When are vote totals visible?
Not while voting is open. Totals stay hidden until the winners are announced, so early votes can't sway later ones.
What happens if there's a tie?
Whoever reached the winning total first takes the award. If two nominees end on the same number of votes, the one who got there earlier wins — a late surge doesn't displace someone who was there first.
Does every category get an award?
Only categories with three or more nominees are awarded. With fewer than that a vote doesn't say much, so the category is left unawarded rather than crowning a nominee by default.
What about suspicious voting?
It's one person, one vote per category. Anomalous votes may be discarded, and accounts involved in manipulation may be excluded.
What information do you store about me?
Only your name and email from your sign-in provider, plus the nominations and votes you submit. No passwords, no payment details — the Privacy Policy has the full picture.
Is this affiliated with any other award show?
No. The Blackademy Awards is independent and community-run — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any other award show, academy or industry body. Nominee names and images come from IMDb, for identification only.
